Few things to keep in mind before starting:

  • Nothing is more delicious than a warm chocochip cookie and when it is prepared using all the healthy ingredients like wheat flour instead of all purpose flour, desi khand instead of normal sugar, oats and hazelnuts, it becomes good enough a reason for every mom to prepare it for her kids.
  • Always keep this thumb rule for baking in mind that all your ingredients should be at room temperature.
  • In baking, always make sure to use the exact quantity of all the ingredients using measuring cups & spoons levelled to the brim with your finger.
  • You have to cream your butter along with sugar well for around 5-7 minutes with a hand whisk or an electric beater till it changes its colour and becomes smooth and creamy.
  • After creaming your butter and sugar, add the dry ingredients and mix lightly using either a spatula or your hands to form a cookie dough.
  • Refrigerate the cookie dough for around 30 minutes to firm it up well so that it can be shaped easily.
  • Use an ice cream scooper or a spoon to divide the dough to make uniform sized cookies.
  • Always preheat your oven and greased baking tray for uniform baking and leavening of your bakery items.
  • Bake the cookies initially at low temperature and then at high temperature to get great results.
  • You may replace hazelnuts with any other nuts of your choice.
  • You may either use salted butter or unsalted one. In case you are using unsalted butter, do remember to add a pinch of salt to enhance the sweetness of your cookies.
  • If you do not want to add cocoa powder, you may simply replace it with the same quantity of whole wheat flour in the recipe.
  • Always give a brief resting time to your baked cookies on a wire rack.
  • I have baked these cookies in convection mode of my microwave. You may follow the same steps in an oven too.
  • Baking time always varies with different types of ovens. So always keep an eye on your dish while baking them.

Ingredients:(for 6 cookies, approx. 2.5 inch dia)

  • Whole wheat flour – 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp
  • Rolled Oats – 1 tbsp (ground)
  • Cocoa powder – 1 tbsp
  • Baking powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Salted butter – 1/4 cup
  • Desi khand – 3 tbsp
  • Icing sugar – 3 tbsp
  • Vanilla essence – 1/2 tsp
  • Milk – 1 tbsp
  • Hazelnuts – 1 tbsp (chopped)
  • Chocochips (https://amzn.to/2CtLVrY)- 1 tbsp + few to top the cookies


  • Take all your ingredients at room temperature and measure them properly using measuring cups and spoons levelled to the brim.
  • Grind the rolled oats to a powdery form.
  • Sieve the dry ingredients(wheat flour, baking powder and cocoa powder) except sugar, oats, chocochips (https://amzn.to/2CtLVrY) & nuts and keep them aside.
  • Cream together butter and sugar for 5-7 minutes till the mixture becomes smooth, creamy and light in colour using a hand whisk or an electric beater. Then add vanilla essence to it and mix well.
  • Now add oats and sieved dry ingredients to the sugar-butter mixture. Mix these lightly using your hands or a spatula to form a dough.
  • Add 1 tbsp chocochips (https://amzn.to/2CtLVrY) and 1 tbsp chopped hazelnuts to the dough. Do not over mix at this stage.
  • Let the dough rest in refrigerator for 30 minutes covered in a cling film.
  • Preheat your oven along with your greased baking tray for 10 minutes.
  • Using an ice cream scooper, divide the dough uniformly, shape your cookies, place them on the baking tray keeping a good distance between each cookie as they are going to expand while baking, gently press them with your fingers and top up with a few chocochips (https://amzn.to/2CtLVrY).
  • Bake these at 150 degree C for 10 minutes initially. Remove the tray from the oven. Using a fork, gently prick the surface of each cookie so as to avoid them fluffing up in the centre and thereby, making them crunchier.
  • Again bake these at 150 degree C for 5 minutes and then change the oven temperature to 180 degree C and bake your cookies for 15-20 minutes more. Baking time varies with different ovens, so keep an eye on your cookies while baking.
  • Let the cookies rest on a wire rack for few minutes before consuming them.
  • You may store them in an air tight container.
